EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The applicant was discharged for Condition, Not A Disability in 2012.

After reporting aboard the assigned vessel, the applicant began to perform duties underway with the rest of the
crew. The applicant started experiencing chronic motion sickness and seasickness from the onset which
prompted many visits to the clinic for medical evaluations. After 14 underway periods and 8 trips to clinic, the
medical staff endorsed an administration discharge due to the inability to adapt and tolerate the sea duty

conditions and environment. The command processed the Discharge paperwork and it was effective after 9
months service.

The Board finds no issues with propriety or equity in this case.

The applicant was notified of the intent to discharge, and the applicant was advised of the right to an attorney.
The applicant declined to make a statement and did not object to discharge.

An RE3 reentry code is not an affirmative recommendation for reenlistment, rather it represents that the

applicant is not recommended for reenlistment due to a disqualifying factor. The RE3 code may be waived
based upon the policies and needs of the gaining Service.

Propriety: Discharge was proper.
Equity: Discharge was equitable.
Final Adjudication by Assistant Commandant For Human Resources: No relief.

The Board notes that the applicant’s DD-214 lists the Narrative Reason for Separation as Convenience of the Gov't. Therefore, the DD-214 should be amended to list the Narrative Reason for Separation as ‘Condition, Not a Disability’. Board recommends no relief other than administrative change on the Narrative Reason for separation.

After just a few months, the applicant had difficulty adjusting to military life and went to the clinic for a psychiatric review. In accordance with (post-policy) ALCOAST 252/09, the Board recommends a change to SPD code JFY, Narrative Reason of Adjustment Disorder, and a Re-entry code of RE-3G. The FY series was to be aligned with the new narrative reason of ‘Adjustment Disorder’ which is best suited for the medical assessment made by the Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth in late 2006.
